Improved properties of corn starch-based bio-nanocomposite film with different types of plasticizers reinforced by nanocrystalline cellulose

A single-use of the corn starch-based bionanocomposite film has several weaknesses, such as stiffness, ease brittleness, and low moisture barrier properties. The addition plasticizers nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) is expected to increase packaging This study used starch var. Paragon from Indonesia a raw material produce strong film. aimed evaluate physical mechanical properties based on with different (glycerol (MW = 92.094 g/mol)/sorbitol (182.17 g/mol)) concentrations NCC (0, 3, 5 wt.%). result showed that sorbitol plasticized reinforced by wt.% was most effective improve thickness 0.256 mm; color values L*, a*, b* 97.43, −0.04, 1.85, respectively; water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) 2.259 g/m2 h; solubility 30.73%; tensile strength 4.69 MPa; elongation at break 56%; young’s modulus 0.084 MPa. treatment significantly reduced film’s brittleness while increasing its flexibility, strength, elongation, modulus, resistance transmission. Plasticizers more markedly affected films. However, WVTR In conclusion, this provides great opportunity for development films biodegradable in future.
